Mawazo PhD Scholars Programme for Africans at Kenyan Universities, 2018
The Mawazo Institute is currently accepting applications for PhD Scholars programme. This is a one-year, non-residential fellowship aimed at women pursuing PhD studies focused on climate change and energy at Kenyan universities.The goal of this programme is to build a strong pipeline of future researchers who are prepared to ask insightful questions about African development, and effectively communicate their results to both government and industry leaders and the general public.
The Mawazo Institute is a non-profit research institute based in Nairobi, Kenya. We support the next generation of female thought leaders and scholars in Africa and get policymakers and the public engaged with their research. Our priority research areas are energy and climate change.

Scholarship Description:
Application Deadline: January 26, 2018
Course Level: Scholarship is available to pursue PhD programme.
Study Subject: The scholarship is focused on climate change and energy at Kenyan universities.
Scholarship Award: Mawazo PhD Scholars receive the following benefits:
A research grant worth Ksh 500,000 on average (precise value will vary depending on the amount needed for each Scholar’s research)
Training in research methods, academic writing, grant writing, public engagement, and the publication process
Research and editorial support from the Mawazo staff
Travel grants for participation in regional or international conferences
Connections to mentors, and industry and government leaders, in their field
A dedicated desk at Mawazo’s office at Ikigai, Spring Valley, Nairobi.
Nationality: African students are eligible.
Number of Scholarships: In 2018, the MawazoPhD. Scholars Programme will support up to six female PhD students at Kenyan universities.

Eligibility for the Scholarship:
Eligible Countries: African students (Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Western Sahara, Zambia and Zimbabwe) are eligible to apply for this scholarship programme.

Entrance Requirements: Applicants should apply for the Mawazo Ph.D. Scholars programme if you are:

A woman under the age of 40 (as of 1 January 2018)
A citizen of an African country
Enrolled in a Ph.D. programme at a Kenyan university
In any department in the social sciences or a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) field
Studying a topic related to energy or climate change
Working on or about to begin working on an academic research project which is intended for publication
Currently living in Kenya, or otherwise able to travel to Nairobi at least two times per month for the rest of 2018
English Language Requirements: Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level required by the University.

Application Procedure:
How to Apply: The application for the 2018 Ph.D. Scholars cohort is now open. Applications must be submitted through our online portal. We will not accept applications submitted via email or in hard copy.

The application includes the following materials:

A current CV, including at least two references
A letter from the applicant’s university department confirming current enrollment in the Ph.D. programme
A letter of support from a supervisor at the Ph.D. programme (emailed directly to the Ph.D. Scholars contact address with the subject line “Letter of Support — [Applicant’s First and Last Name]”)
A research proposal of 1000 words or less, including:
Brief literature review
Description of proposed research design and data collection methods
Summary of work completed on the project to date
List of next steps and estimated timeline to complete the project
A budget for the project
Applicants may request up to Ksh 500,000 from Mawazo
Mawazo provides a conference travel grant on top of the research funding, so the project budget should not include any expenses related to conference travel

International Institute of Tropical Agriculture Research Fellowships in Africa, 2018
The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is calling applications from African students to apply for it’s a three-year research grant funded by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Up to 20 are available Fellowships to promote research on “youth engagement in agribusiness and rural economic activities in Africa”.

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is a non-profit institution that generates agricultural innovations to meet Africa’s most pressing challenges of hunger, malnutrition, poverty, and natural resource degradation. Working with various partners across sub-Saharan Africa, we improve livelihoods, enhance food and nutrition security, increase employment, and preserve natural resource integrity.

Scholarship Description:
Application deadline: February 28, 2018
Course Level: Fellowships are available to pursue research.
Study Subject: Fellowships to promote research on “youth engagement in agribusiness and rural economic activities in Africa”.
Scholarship Award:
Awards for Research Grants are up to $10,000 (Proposals with a reasonable higher budget can also be selected depending on the quality of the research proposal).
Grantees will be supervised by one IITA scientist in close collaboration with their national/university supervisor.
Grantees will be offered training on research methodology, data management, and scientific writing;
Grantees will be offered training on production of research evidence for policy-making.
Nationality: African students
Number of Scholarships: Under the framework of this project, IITA is pleased to announce 20 research fellowships for 2018.
Scholarship can be taken in The research will be carried out in the following countries: Benin, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Senegal, and Zambia.
Eligibility for the Scholarship:
Eligible Countries: African students are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following conditions:

The research will be carried out in the following countries: Benin, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Senegal, and Zambia.
Applicants must not be more than 40 years old at the time of application.
Applicants must be a young scholar at a research institute or university in Africa or a student registered in a Ph.D. or Master’s program in recognized universities in Africa, majoring in agricultural economics, agribusiness, or economics or a related social science, and must have finished their university coursework.
The duration of the research should not exceed 6 months.

English Language Requirements: Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level required by the University.

Application Procedure:
How to Apply: Applications must be submitted electronically in English or French, by email to IITA-TrainingUnit-at-cgiar.org. Applicants will be asked to enter specific information in text boxes and upload documents in PDF format. The deadline for submission is 23:59 WAT, 28 February 2018. Applicants are encouraged to submit proposals in advance of the deadline.
